Orlando Women Build Week a success!

Monday morning, May 3rd, was the kick off of the 2010 Orlando Women Build Week. National Partner Lowes and Lead Sponsors Universal Orlando and Delta Air Lines were all present to show their support. Others present were Orlando Police Chief Val Demings, Deirdre Macnab - President of the League of Women Voters of Florida and Rachael Todd - Miss Florida 2009.

Throughout the week there were over 420 female volunteers working at Stag Horn Villas to help build 7 townhomes; these same volunteers also helped raise over $80,000 to sponsor a home for Alice Tolliver, single mother of three. Sincere Thanks to all our generous supporters!

Women Build Week culminated on Sunday, Mother’s Day with a Celebration at Stag Horn Villas. Annetta Wilson and homeowner Alice Tolliver were the keynote speakers. We celebrated with over 7,000 women nationwide as we reflected on the accomplishment of our female volunteers, fundraising teams and the generosity of our sponsors.

Women Build Week

Women Build Week brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children across the globe. In 2010, across all 50 states, more than 7,000 women volunteers were building and raising the funding needed to build affordable homes at more than 200 Habitat for Humanity construction sites.

The Mother’s Day timeframe was selected for its significance to many volunteers, as families with children make up a staggering number of those in need of adequate housing. More than 12 million children—one in six—live in poverty housing in the United States alone. To date, Women Build crews have built more than 1,400 Habitat homes nationwide. Your contribution is needed now more than ever and will help build a home for a single mother in need.

Lowes Women Build Training Clinics

In 2008, Lowe’s sponsored the first “National Women Build Week” and was again the sponsor in 2009 committing $875,000 as part of its current five-year pledge to Habitat. Last year Lowes helped sponsor a townhome in Stag Horn Villas. This year Habitat Orlando has been awarded a $5,000 Lowes grant for our participation in a Women Build. Leading up to Women Build Week, two Orlando Lowes stores, W. Colonial Dr., & S. Semoran Blvd., hosted volunteer clinics for our female volunteers and Lowes female staff helped work volunteer shifts throughout the week.

Sincere thanks to our friends at Lowes for their continued support!
